What is the birthstone for November?

The November birthstone is Topaz! You are so lucky because the Topaz stone gives you so much variety through its many colors such as blue, pink, brown, green, colorless and yellow. The most regal of all is the Imperial Topaz with its orange-red coloring. That variety is a rare find.

History of the November birthstone

The Egyptians believe Topaz had the golden glow of the sun god Ra. The Greeks believed it could increase one’s strength, and the Romans associated it with Jupiter, who also is the god of the sun.  Ancient Egyptians and Greeks believe the Topaz had many powers. It was said when worn as an amulet it would prevent sadness and strengthen intellect. When mounted in gold and worn as a necklace it prevented bad charms and spells. If you were to grind it up and put it in your glass of wine it was believed to cure insomnia, asthma, burns and prevent hemorrhaging. Also, if you didn’t happen to have a cup bearer employed, it was said to change colors in the presence of poisoned food or drink. Because of the reds under tones of the Topaz it has a much warmer look if mounted in yellow metal. The rich yellow color of 18k gold is a great choice.

Birthstone twins – Topaz and Citrine

Surprise, you are lucky enough to have a second birthstone, Citrine! These two stones in certain colors look almost identical. This stone is also mined in Brazil. It forms from a light yellow to a gold-brown and orange. These earthly tones are popular in silver mounting which enhance to golden colors. Touches of gold on the mounting give a rich accent to every piece. Citrine has its claim to fame with healing powers too. It is said the stone heals urinary, kidney and digestive diseases and cleans toxins out of the body. Although, the most joy you will receive is the beauty of wearing these gems. The Citrine has a hardness that allows it to hold up to the rough and tumble wear of every day wear.

How should I wear November’s birthstones?

Both of these stones beautiful colors are enhanced when the accent stones are diamonds. The very white color of diamonds and pearls enhance the rich colors these stones form in. So many beautiful designs are available from a halo of diamonds surrounding the stones, or something as simple as a single diamond on either side in a ring. Vintage styles are so pretty with the combinations of pearls and citrine or Topaz. And for a unique engagement ring try designing with these as the center stone and accenting with diamonds. Or vise versa.

If your birthday is this month enjoy these beautiful stones by adding them to your collection. Even if it is not your birthstone it is a wonderful compliment to the colors for this fall, Warm Taupe, Dusty Cedar, and Aurora Red. Gives me a warm feeling just thinking about them!
